So lately, due to family and peer pressure, I have resorted
to seeking potential boyfriends in dating sites. Yes, it’s quite uncomfortable
to resort to this thing but honestly, it’s been convenient for me. It’s like
speed-dating without the fuzz. All you have to do is view some profiles, read
things about them and if you like the guy, you chat and arrange for a date. For
me, this gives both of you an advanced step. What you’ll read is most probably
the same thing that they’ll tell you during first dates. Being able to read
something about the guy gives you a chance to weigh in the chances of
compatibility.
However, there are a few simple but important things you must always remember when trying online dating.
First, try to know much about your potential guy’s personality. Chatting with a person can give you a hint about someone’s personality. The words they use and how they use them can mirror some things that are running in their minds. Talking to them over the phone or over a video chat is much better though.
Secure your security info. Your exact address, birthday, place of work and other information like these should be reserved until you personally meet the person and see that those info are safe to be disclosed to him.
The crowd is your ally. It is generally safe to meet with a semi-stranger within a descent crowd. Coffee shops are ideal for first meets. The environment is relaxed and encourages some conversation. Restaurants on the other side can be too formal for a meet and greet. Parks can be dangerous because the area usually is too wide and people there are often busy with their business.
Lastly, always be reminded that there are a lot of monsters out there who are taking advantage of the online dating scene by farming people they could use. Be it for sex, money or other unimaginable things. These people would often pose as someone who is genuinely seeking for a real commitment. They’ll say things that you would usually hear from people with honest intentions. However, their words, moods and demeanor would often give you clues about their real agenda. I don’t have an exact guideline for this. All you have to do is to be very careful in trusting anyone, especially those that you meet online. Take baby steps, little by little if you have to but ultimately, listen to your guts and let your instincts and common sense guide you.
